One New Change has been described as “one of the most beautifully designed and high quality buildings” that has ever been considered for the British Council of Shopping Centres annual awards, as it won the Gold Award for In-Town Retail Scheme under 300,000 sq ft.

The building, which represents one of the largest consolidated retail spaces across central London, has now won ten major awards since it completed just over a year ago.

With 214,000sq ft of retail space over three storeys, the shopping centre has transformed the City into a successful destination venue.

Sidell Gibson Interiors always ensures that its clients come first and this has resulted in the company producing an extraordinary diversity of award winning work. The old Porter’s Lodge attached to the southern section of Bedford Park Mansions in  Chiswick is a prime example. This was the first mansion block style building to be built in the area and was completed in 1900. Although the buildings are not listed, the site is surrounded by Grade II listed houses and therefore the redevelopment of the  Lodge was subject to conservation planning and consents.

It was subsequently totally remodelled and extended to create a new house to match the surrounding architectural style. The block is built in the Queen Anne style popular in the late 19th century featuring red brick, terracotta reliefs, Dutch gables and crenulated parapets. However, once inside, a minimalist icon is unveiled.

Sidell Gibson believes that the secret of designing the perfect interiors lies in the detail and handling of the space. Within The Lodge, its walls appear to float above the wide Douglas fir floorboards while the ceilings mirror this effect. A simple steel spiral staircase has been created to allow for maximum natural light to penetrate from above. This makes the light dapple and etch a tree-like silhouette on the floor below.
Indeed life inside The Lodge is very much designed to be in balance with nature.

One New Change is one of the selected buildings shortlisted for the 2011 London Planning Awards which celebrate outstanding contribution to planning for the capital’s urban renaissance.  Other buildings shortlisted include The Heron Tower, Westfield Shopping Centre, Stratford, Arsenal Football Stadium, the Home Office, the Sammy Ofer Wing at the National Maritime Museum and Surrey County Cricket Club’s OCA Stand at the KIA Oval.

The London Planning Awards, now in their ninth year, are organised by London First in conjunction with the Mayor, the Royal Town Planning Institute and London Councils and have become London’s major showcase for public and private sector planning.  All shortlisted entries will go forward to the awards ceremony which will take place on 16^th January 2012 at City Hall, to be attended by leading developers and prominent local government officials, with the winners to be announced by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor Sir Edward Lister.

By no means the biggest job we have done but still a fascinating and satisfying one, the restoration of the Victorian conservatory at The Cedars, Chorleywood has been successfully completed. This is not Kew or Sion House but it is still a very large piece of historical metalwork with parts reputedly copied or borrowed from the Crystal Palace.

Originally a house for the governor of the Bank of England, The Cedars these days is the centrepiece of a large retirement village and the newly restored conservatory is a fantastic facility for the residents who can be seen here enjoying themselves at the grand re-opening.

One New Change has been honoured as one of the capital’s best projects in London’s built environment, winning the award for the ‘Shopping’ category at the inaugural New London Awards, held on 12^th July at The Guildhall in London.

Sidell Gibson’s work has been recognised with two awards at the Association of Interior Specialists Contractors Awards 2011.

The practice’s recently completed £67m project at One Snow Hill in Birmingham received a Gold Award for the partitioning work undertaken by Moda Interiors.  One Snow Hill is the first of two fast track office buildings to be completed in central Birmingham’s prestigious Snow Hill development for Barclays.  The partitioning work included a glass screen installation which was technically very complex with curved glass screens, curve glass doors and door frames.  Peter Balch, Managing Director at Moda Interiors, said, “We are delighted to be recognised as a leading contractor in our industry.  This award demonstrates the quality of work we produce and the benefits of working in partnership to fulfil the ultimate end user’s client requirements.”

London’s multi award-winning mixed-use development, One New Change, was awarded the Gold Judges’ Award for the internal cladding design and the finishes to the retail arcade ceiling, undertaken by Clark & Fenn Skanska Ltd.  Piotr Pawlowski, Contracts Manager, said, “We are delighted that our work at One New Change has won the Gold Judges’s Award.  This project was particularly complex, incorporating bespoke logistics and innovative technology such as facetted stainless steel ceiling panels with concealed fixings and polished plaster to the large ceiling planes, which consisted of different angles, sloping edges and differing levelling points.  A supporting grid frame  was constructed for strength and stability for the polished plaster application and to maintain isolated panel movement.  Each ceiling facet of polished plaster panels was  also finished with multiple colours to correspond to the external cladding facade.”

Ron Sidell will be speaking at the NLA’s conference ‘London’s Workplaces:  Remaining competitive in a changing world’, on the subject of office design and management.

With a back-catalogue containing some of the most inspiring Central London offices built in the last 20 years, Ron has plenty of reference material!  More recently, the masterplanning of the Paddington Central project, the Snow Hill redevelopment in Birmingham and finally One New Change, one of the most historically strategic and comprehensive redevelopments completed in the City of London.

London is consistently ranked as one of the leading cities to locate, invest and do business.  It is the engine room for the UK economy and a key driver of innovation and growth.  London’s workplaces must adapt and develop to remain competitive by developing a more sustainable approach to energy use, accommodating advanced technologies and creating improved working environments which allow business to attract and retain the best talent.  The conference will be looking at the challenges ahead and the ways in which the sector is responding.
